How to take the plunge, embrace the pivot and overcome procrastination?

CLICK PLAY BELOW TO LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE

To move forward in life despite anxiety, self doubt, worry or taking on the people pleasing role these three topics are super important. Learning to take the plunge, make the pivots and overcome the procrastination that plagues us all.

Lets start with the Plunge.

That moment where we’ve been teetering on the edge, dancing around the idea… or we’re slooooooowly inching towards the diving board.

Have you ever had that moment when you’re standing at the waters edge to go for a swim, you’re stripped down to your cute swimwear, the suns out warming your skin, you poke a toe in to check the temperature and its fuh-reezing. You look around and everyone else is already in the water having a great time… you start slowly inching forward but you’re so nice and warm in the sun that you stop just below your knees, the goosebumps are creeping up your arms …. You REALLY don’t want to just get the eff in the water, so you start making up reasons why you don’t want to … your brain starts justifying why you actually are quite happy not swimming (and you know just casually missing out on having fun with everyone else), you just ate lunch, you’ve got a good book in your bag, you actually didn’t want to get your hair wet anyway…. But what your brain is conveniently forgetting to mention is that EVERYONE ELSE just made the plunge and then had an awesome time…

I’ll be honest here - pressing record on this podcast was a long time coming for me. I made up lots of stories about why I didn’t need to take the plunge, that I didn’t have my episodes all planned out and edited, that i needed more time, that I didn’t have anything to say… ughhh honestly… brain just shshhhhhhhhhhhhh

Most of the big decisions in life don’t happen without taking the plunge, or feeling the fear and doing it anyways… the twin of this feeling is a character called overwhelm, where we suddenly let ourselves create a never ending list of reasons why we can’t do something. Which is where taking lots of small steps and actions can be an awesome tool to still add up to massive action.

But it does need us to plunge in and start taking that first action, followed up every day to keep moving forward… So let me be the voice that encourages you to take that first plunge towards that thing that you REALLY WANT to do but you haven’t done more than think about or talk about …. My starting point for you would be to write down that entire list swirling around inside your head… get everything down on paper, then take out a highlighter and find three things on that list that you can do today. Just three things… then take the plunge and DO THEM. Then tomorrow, revisit that list and pick three more things… it doesn’t have to be huge tasks… but what it DOES need is for you to commit to DOING… it won’t be long til you’re out there swimming with all those other people who jumped in, despite those fears … because you can be 100% sure those people have plenty of fears too. They’ve just taken action and brought those fears along with them for the ride anyways.

Embracing the Pivot

So, I have two dogs, and they are obsessed with going to our beach here where I live, and they both LIVE for chasing tennis balls, bringing them back, chasing them, over & over… we use this awesome ball thrower that makes it go way further than if I was trying to throw it for them, and they honestly FROTH over this … basically any time I put my shoes on and open the door to go outside and get in the car they are like THIS! IS! IT!… life has just peaked… tails are wagging… they’re making funny noises… they can’t get in fast enough…. But can I let you in on a secret? You see the thing is, we’re not always going to the beach.

But they are this excited EVERY SINGLE TIME. Without fail. They have mastered the art of the PIVOT. They can get in that car without knowing the final destination and have the time of their freaking life no matter where they go.  I can guess that most of the time when you dive into a big decision, or new idea, you mgiht just often go in with a pre-conceived idea of how its going to turn out or be … and I can unapologetically say I have been guilty of this sooooo many times in my life… I’m learning and growing through this as a life lesson to emmbrace the pivot on the daily…. I’ve cried more times than I can count because something didn’t go exactly as I had planned, I’ve got frustrated, angry, disappointed…. Did any of those emotions do anything to change the way things were? Nope….. If I had just stepped back and let life work in the magic way it was supposed to then I probably would have saved myself a whole lot of feeling crappy and not put myself under STRESS …. Because having the ability to PIVOT in our emotional bag of tricks is crucial to happiness. Its one of the keys to achieving what we want in life, or manifesting our best life, or finding inner peace and compassion… having the ability to let go of the reins and just BE with what is… this is a game changing tool to find the joy in the life you’re living today.

If you’re struggling with the pivot part in life, just know that you’re not alone, and there are some simple ways you can help reduce that stressful energy stirred up.

if you haven’t already got yourself a journal to write in (we’ll do a podcast episode about this later) get yourself something to write in each day, and start a gratitude list .. which is writing down a list of 5 things you are grateful for  every day - I usually do this in the morning, but you can honestly do this whenever and wherever… you can even just say them out loud if you dont have a journal with you. But this brings you back in tune with the part of your body that helps you to keep your cool and relax…. It also helps put everything back into perspective pretty damn quick when you feel like things aren’t going the way you expected….

My next tip is to get out in nature…. There are so many benefits to our brains and bodies being surrounded by plants, trees, greenery… plus moving your body while you’re there releases lots of feel good vibes in your body…. Because i know you;re probably not fizzing over drinking green smoothies every morning, think of this like the super awesome alternative to drinking blended up kale

My third tip is to detox from social media and news… checking those feeds all day raises our cortisol and stress levels, and not only that but it puts our brains in a place of comparison, or fight or flight mode… whatever you want to call it….  seeing what other people are doing on their instagram highlight reel. Its easy to start thinking that life is happening perfectly for everyone else, that you are the only person that things are going wrong, or that things aren’t going the way they were supposed to…. But its not true, thats just a story your brain is telling you - remember that no one is posting their failures onlne… so Take the time away from it … the world will keep turning, and you’ll feel a thousand percent better trust me

Overcoming Procrastination

I love this quote from Brene Brown… it hits home because a big source of my personal procrastination is to do with my on-going process to become a fully recovered people-pleaser… its goes:
“Do not think you can be brave with your life and your work and never disappoint anyone. It doesn’t work that way.”

Because I can get tied up in the thoughts about other peoples opinions and a fear of not doing things perfectly… i can get stuck in procrastination mode. Notice I’m not saying that I’m a procrastinator… but that it is a state to be in. Basically it is a habit that you adopt as a coping mechanism or crutch that tricks us into thinking that its our best mate and helps us handle emotions going on. But its not helping… while it takes attention away from the THING that might be causing us discomfort or stress… but handling procrastination and moving forward, or even back on track with that happiness mission that you are on… doesnt need you to feel guilt or self judgement, orto loose your motivation completely… just recognise that its there, and face up to what that source of stress actually is for you. Is it fear of failure? Fear of being seen? Fear of putting yourself out there?

A tip that I love for helping to beat the state or habit of procrastination is similar to the strategy we talked about when taking the plunge… using a small, achievable amount of time (rather than facing down a whole day of trying to work on something) just commit to yourself that you’ll do that thing for 5 minutes…. Its more about getting yourself to START doing something… so if its getting to the gym, going for that walk, dealing with your bills… just set yourself 5 minutes when you will sit and DO the work...  just for 5 minutes…. I got this from Mel Robbins, that when you just start, over 80% of people will actually keep working on something longer than that 5 minutes…. Its not your ABILITY … because you are stunning and capable and brilliant … its your own self getting yourself to make the start.

So those are my 3 P’s for you this week - now my ask of you is to think about where in your own life are you maybe just maybe avoiding the plunge, resisting the pivot and getting stuck in procrastination mode?

Is it in your health?

In your relationships with your loved ones?

Is it with your kids?

Your money?

If you can face that shit down, acknowledge it & you know just stick your hand up and own your habits… thats half the battle won right there, and remember… you got this!
